India bagged its second medal in the Rio Olympics thanks to a brilliant performance from PV Sindhu in the women’s singles badminton event. The 21-year-old could not win gold but her performances in the tournament ensured she finished with a silver medal.

The entire nation was glued to their screens watching the youngster battle it out for gold and even though she missed out, the badminton star got a lot of support through various social media channels.

Indian cricketer, Ravichandran Ashwin also wished Sindhu for her feat, as she became the fifth Indian woman to pick up a medal at the Olympic games.

“Sindhu, you got the entire country glued to the television sets, you been a great ambassador for the sport in our country. I hope the sport takes off from here”, Ashwin said via video message on Twitter.

Despite a busy schedule with India taking on the West Indies in a Test series, the India cricketers have often taken time out to watch and support their favourite athletes. Virat Kohli had earlier mentioned that he was going to watch Usain Bolt’s event at Rio and Ashwin too was providing regular updates on Twitter as Sindhu fought hard against Carolina Marin in the final.

Badminton is more important than the internet for Sindhu

After winning India’s 2nd ever badminton medal Sindhu told Sportskeeda, “For the last three months, I had no access to the phone or internet, finally I have got it back from the coach.

“I do not think it is a sacrifice because badminton is more important to me than the internet, and I chose what I love best.”

Sindhu might not have won the gold but she won millions of hearts not only due to her performance but her gesture at the end of the match. As Marin was celebrating her victory, Sindhu picked up the racket which the Spaniard had flung away and the Indian kept it to the side where Marin’s bag was placed.

The 21-year-old will hope that this was just a taste of things to come and hopefully, by 2020, the medal will be gold rather than silver for the Indian.
