Dhoni is key to the perfection of Indian cricket at the moment, says former Indian wicket-keeper

England v India - Royal London One-Day Series 2014

What's the story?

MS Dhoni might not be amongst the runs at the moment, but former Indian wicket-keeper, Kiran More, feels that he is a key member of the squad and is integral to the success of the team.

"Dhoni is very important as a player. There is no question mark about him. He is a key figure in the team. The bowlers, especially the two young spinners, are benefitting immensely from his presence. He is so important behind the wicket. He has been telling them where to bowl and what to bowl," More told International Business Times India.

In case you didn't know...

Dhoni has not been in great form with the bat lately. Apart from a brisk knock of 42 against South Africa in the 4th ODI, he has not made a big impact.

However, his presence in the field has helped India achieve a lot of success. He is often heard guiding the bowlers and setting the field, despite Virat Kohli being the captain.

The details:

More felt that Kohli has benefitted a lot from Dhoni's presence in the field and went on to say that he is key to the perfection of Indian cricket.

"I think he has been doing this for so many years. Now that is benefitting Virat Kohli immensely because he gets a free hand to think about the bowlers, think about the field placements. He can focus on his own batting," More said.

"Dhoni's role, helping the captain and other members, is very important. He is key to the perfection of Indian cricket at the moment," he added.

What's next?

After having taken a 1-0 lead in the T20I series against South Africa, India will look to seal the series by winning the second match which takes place on February 21.

Author's take:

Dhoni has been an inspirational figure in the team for a long time and he will continue to be so right until he decides to retire. The youngsters in the team have blossomed under him and his presence has taken a lot of pressure off Kohli.

India are scheduled to play a lot of limited overs matches until the 2019 World Cup and it looks like Dhoni will continue to be a part of the set-up right until the conclusion of the tournament in England.
