If you are an Indian cricket fan, this is not a good time to be in. The horrific performance of the Indian team has let everyone down. This bright, young, jubilant squad had everyone buzzing. There were very high expectations when Virat Kohli and his men set foot on English soil. But soon those dreams turned into nightmares. If you see the likes of Pakistan in recent times, they have played pretty well under these circumstances and even managed to curve out a draw in the last Test series that concluded.

But why is Indian team with so much talent and class in their ranks struggle to get a grip of things in these conditions. Is it because of the lack of practice matches or is it the over reliance on Virat Kohli. Whatever may be the case, it needs to be sorted now.

#1 The Start

Leicestershire v India - Tour Match
Vijay and Dhawan

For any opening batsman, playing in England is a delight as well as a nightmare. The red new ball will be seaming around in the early morning, balls missing the bat by a close margin. A few good cover drives and a few outside edges. All these help a batsman develop his instinct and a skill which they can carry throughout their career. The Indian top order is in a mess at the moment. They have already tried different combinations but none delivered. A good start in England is the stepping stone for the rest of the innings. If India can get a good opening partnership, that will lay the foundation for the rest of the batsman to pounce on.

#2 Wicket-keeper batsman

Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik's performances have been sad. Arguments can be made about this being his comeback series in Test cricket. But when you have once chance to perform to cement your place in the side, you got to deliver. A wicket-keeper takes charge of things in the middle-order. He needs to perform now else with Rishabh Pant already waiting in the side-lines Karthik could well find himself out of the reckoning again.

#3 A top quality all rounder

England v India: Specsavers 2nd Test - Day Three
Hardik Pandya

It looks like the current bunch of cricketers are more inclined towards ODIs and T20s. They are so used to playing limited overs cricket that they often lack the skills and technique to be successful in the longer format of the game. Having an all-rounder in your ranks is a blessing. Pandya is good but is he suitable for longer formats of the game? I believe a good batting all-rounder who can survive and play outside sub-continental conditions is a necessity for this Indian team.

#4 Over-reliant on Kohli

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has been the only bright side for the Indian team. His performances have been flawless and because of him India came so close to winning the first Test match. But a cricket team cannot be successful depending on just one individual. It’s a team game. In the first Test, when the entire batting line up crumbled, Kohli fought hard to save our face. If he gets support from a few batsmen, I am sure India will make a comeback in this series. It’s the batting that is letting them down. It is unfair to expect Virat to score a century every match.
