Commentary

Right then! New Zealand maintain their unbeaten streak at home as they won their 13th consecutive match. Since 2019, they haven't suffered a defeat in their backyard. India posted a challenging total but Latham stepped in and produced one of the magical innings at Eden Park to help New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in the series

The Indian fans got to witness Umran Malik's sheer pace as he bowled brilliantly to get two wickets in his debut match but his heroics lasted only for a short while. India's inexperience in the bowling attack was evident at the back end as they kept repeating the same mistake by bowling short to Tom Latham and paid the heavy price. There is not enough time for India to rework their tactics as the second match takes place in Hamilton on Sunday

Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): I thought at the half way stage it was a competitive total as you saw the ball was turning. But if you get a partnership in Eden park it is easy. Tom Lath played great as he flicked the switch at an important time. If we bowl hard and straight on this wicket, it's not easy to get away. That was one of the best knocks I have ever seen. You are always in the game because of the dimensions but we are curious about how the wicket plays. You think about different things considering the turn. They got a reasonable total but it's good to see us get that partnership. I am happy to contribute and obviously, with Tommy going at the other end, my aim was to compliment him. He was going like a steep train and I want to make sure he gets the comfort. It was super-special to be at the other end to see that knock

Shikhar Dhawan (Indian captain): We felt good with the total. (Enough on the board?) The ball was seaming around in the first 10-15 overs. It's a bit different than other grounds, so we had to plan the bowling in accordance with that. We bowled too short sometimes and Latham attacked us. We couldn't get a breakthrough. We missed a few boys on the ground. We bowled too short and Latham took the game away from us, especially in the 40th over when he scored 5 boundaries. After that, we tried to bring the momentum back but it wasn't too much. (His half-century) I really enjoyed playing over here. Would have liked the win but that's part and parcel of the game. It's a good learning for the boys. (Areas to work on) We need to field and implement our plans better. It's a young unit, I'm still proud of them.

Tom Latham is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: It was one of those days when everything comes up well. Just the partnership with Kane and in the end was great. Sometimes that's when I'm at my best rather than looking for shots. I just put the ball in the gaps and ran hard, there was a bit of luck sometimes. Preparation has been ideal. We played the Plunkett Shield, so the prep was been nice. (Pressure?) A little bit. Washington Sundar was getting a bit of turn and found him hard to deal with but the required rate was under 8s. It's a small ground, so we can capitalize on it later. He (Williamson) played a great knock as well. It's one of those days when the stars aligned for us.

Tom Latham's masterclass and Williamson's calm approach helped the Blackcaps to chase this score with minimum fuss and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Looked like they did it without breaking any sweat in the end.

India had two debutants in the bowling department - One really struggled in the powerplay but the other rose to the occasion with sheer pace and kept plaguing the batters. The momentum was with India until the 20th over but Williamson and Latham took the game away from their hands

Latham was happy to knock ones and twos until he got into the groove, while Williamson played a sensible knock and complimented his partner well. The Indian bowlers opted for a short ball strategy against Latham, and that backfired miserably. That one over from Shardul Thakur changed the complexion of the game as Latham not only smashed 25 runs in that over but also brought up his second ODI ton against India. Williamson was happy to play second fiddle in the partnership as he had the best seat in the house to watch his partner tear the Indian bowlers apart
