Well, then. That was a clinical display by the young India side. To be fair, none of the batters from either side found it easy to bat on this surface, except the phenomenal SKY. It seemed like he was batting on a different track and made it look really easy. He is at the top of his game and what a joy it is to see him go about destroying bowling attack with the finesse of an artist.

Hardik Pandya (Captain, India): Absolutely, can't get any better than this. Special innings by Suryakumar Yadav. He put us at least 30 runs ahead. Would have taken 170. After that, the bowlers were clinical. We decided to go in with an aggressive mindset. It is not that you take every ball on. It's about the mindset, it's about body language. We ticked all those boxes. Looking at the dew, no, proper water from the rain, the bowlers stuck to the plan and got the wickets. [Hooda bowling] I have bowled lots of times but going forward, I want a number of more bowling opportunities. Not always that those bowlers will have their day but if you give them game time. It could have gone the other way also. But today the sixth bowler Deepak stopped the runs and those two overs changed the game and put them under pressure. There is no expectation, I expect them to be professional, that they are. It's about giving them the environment, just give them the opportunity to show the right behaviour and attitude. Nothing changes, winning and losing are part of this game. People are backing each other, that's what I am looking for. (Changes for third T20I) Don't know, we'll see the wicket. I would love to give everyone an opportunity but it's so short a time. Just one game. We will ask the bowlers and other players if they need rest. If yes, we will see at the ground.

Kane Williamson (Captain, New Zealand): "It was not our best effort. That was one of the best knocks (Suryakumar Yadav's innings) I have ever seen. Some of those shots, I have never seen. That was next level. They were outstanding and we weren't up to the task. It was frustrating but keeps pointing back to Suryakumar and the way he went about. We didn't get momentum with the ball, didn't get enough wickets and didn't get momentum with the bat either. It was frustrating. It did swing a bit (during the chase). Important to look at those few areas and improve. Need to look at the small margins. T20 can be like that sometimes.

Suryakumar Yadav, Player of the Match: I think the plan was clear when I went in to bat. I had to bat till the end to get a par score of 170-175. (What is your secret) I feel, for such format, you have to have good intent, irrespective of the situation and you have to enjoy yourself. (About the team's performance) It is a great feeling, getting a full game here. Going one up in the series is always good and really happy. I feel I didn't think too much, I had my plan and stayed in the present and enjoyed myself. Wonderful crowd here, great to see this support and looking forward to the next game in Napier

Well, then! What a clinical victory for India. The hosts never seemed to be in that chase. The Indian bowlers seemed to be applying pressure right from the word go and never relented at any point during that innings.

It all started with the dismissal of Finn Allen off just the second delivery. Kane Williamson and Devon Conway put on 56 runs for the second wicket but it came off 47 balls. It leaves a lot to be done at the back-end of the innings when you have such a kind of start in a 9.5 runs an over chase.

Kane Williamson laboured his way through the middle overs as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. He did find his way to yet another half-century, but his strike rate only helped to put all the more pressure on the batters at the other end.

All the Indian bowlers contributed well, hitting the right areas and keeping it tight throughout. The scorecard might show a different picture, but the pick of the bowlers certainly was Yuzvendra Chahal. He bowled with a lot of guile through the middle overs and dried the scoring up, picking up two wickets in the process. Deepak Hooda bowled a tight couple of overs in the middle and reaped the rewards for the effort of the bowlers, coming back in the end and claiming three cheap wickets in the final over.

All three pacers had a decent outing tonight. Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled three overs on the trot in the powerplay and gave away just 12 runs. Arshdeep Singh was given just a solitary over in the powerplay, though there was swing on offer. That will be something the management might look back at after this match. Mohammed Siraj produced some unplayable deliveries in his spell, finishing with figures of 2 for 24 including a maiden.
