5 Superstars Who Need To Turn Heel in 2019

As the New Year has already begun, it seems as if the changes that The McMahon Family are promising to bring to the WWE are occurring already. We've seen more aggressive sides to superstars such as AJ Styles & Seth Rollins, and the WWE is clearly listening to their fans as we've also witnessed the rise of Becky Lynch.

However, there are still so many changes that need to occur in terms of character development. You can easily change any wrestler's alignment from heel to face or vice versa, but it will not mean anything unless the booking is handled correctly.

Of course, none of this will happen overnight. And we have an entire year of Raw & Smackdown shows in store for us for these alterations to begin. So here is a list of 5 superstars that are in desperate need of a heel turn in 2019.

#5. Apollo Crews

Could Crews benefit from a heel turn?
Could Crews benefit from a heel turn?

At #5 on the list, Apollo Crews is the epitome of a floundering superstar who desperately needs a change in character. When Crews first arrived onto the main roster, it was a huge shock to the wrestling world as many fans thought that it was far too early for Crews to arrive at the big stages. He was only just starting to get his groove on in NXT before he was called up to the main roster for the new era.

Unfortunately, this was a rookie mistake from WWE as they called up Crews before he was even able to find himself on NXT. There is no doubt that Crews is a decorated wrestler as we have seen with his excellent abilities in being a high flyer as well as being a powerhouse. But the truth of the matter is Crews in need of a character.

We have seen shades of Crews being aggressive before when he confronted Elias on the October 15th, 2018 episode of Raw, after he attacked The Drifter. Crews proved that he could indeed speak on the microphone, but it seems like Crews doesn't seem confident enough when being a babyface. He did seem very confident when he was part of Titus Worldwide, but unfortunately- the stable has clearly been disbanded for unknown reasons.

It's clear that WWE is high on Crews, otherwise, they wouldn't have booked him to win the 20 Man Battle Royal to gain a shot at the Intercontinental Championship on the 31st December 2018 edition of Raw. Crews faced Ambrose on the same night in a losing effort in a good match, but it's clear that Crews isn't being used to the best of his abilities as a face.

Crews need to do something drastic such as brutally attacking a babyface such as John Cena. His reasoning could simply that he is sick and tired of constantly smiling and being happy-go-lucky towards the fans, and not gaining anything out of it. A shock heel turn would work wonders for Crews compared to a long-burning heel turn, as it would definitely be more effective if the fans didn't see it coming.

#4. Tye Dillinger

The Perfect 10 is another option for a heel turn.
The Perfect 10 is another option for a heel turn.

Tye Dillinger is another example of a superstar that really needs to turn heel. The Perfect 10's run on the Smackdown Live roster has been far from perfect. In NXT, Dillinger actually got himself over by constantly losing matches- and the fans were fully backing him to be something as they would always chant "10" as loud as possible.

But fast forward to 2018, and Dillinger's career on the main roster has been nothing but a shambles as his fan support from NXT hasn't translated very well onto the main roster at all. It's clear that the WWE has attempted to regain the magic by booking him exactly as they did in NXT, but it's clearly a strategy that hasn't worked yet.

There are so many babyfaces on the Smackdown Live roster that completely eclipse Dillinger in terms of fan reaction. This is the main reason why Dillinger needs to turn heel. At the age of 37, there may not be a huge world championship future for Dillinger- but there is still so much potential for his character to be useful due to his experience.

The Smackdown Live roster has multiple faces that could be used as execution for a potential heel turn for Dillinger. You have superstars such as Rey Mysterio, Rusev or even Jeff Hardy that can be used to make Dillinger look very strong. A cocky and snarky character would clearly work best for Dillinger due to his size.

The character of being The Perfect 10 is tailor-made for a heel superstar, and as we've seen before with the reverse psychology in superstars like Becky Lynch- a heel turn might possibly be the recipe of what it takes to finally get Dillinger over.

#3. Ember Moon

The Shenom would definitely benefit from having a change in character.

Shenom
would definitely benefit from having a change in character.

The Shenom arrives at #3 on the list of superstars that need a heel turn. Ember Moon's run on Raw has been very decent as of late. Apart from being fantastic in the ring, she hasn't done anything special apart from that. And with the likes of Ronda Rousey, Sasha Banks & Bayley who are clearly bigger babyfaces than Ember, there wouldn't be a better option in the Women's division to make a transition into the dark side than Moon herself.

Moon is very over with the fans, and she has the move-set of a babyface- but unfortunately, she is simply another superstar who lacks the character that is needed to make her a force to be reckoned with. There is no denying that she has a very devious look with the use of a flame in her hair as well as red contact lenses, but what is the point of looking devious if you don't act it?

The Shenom is the perfect nickname for Ember, but she needs to not just claim to be The Shenom- she simply needs to believe it. Just like how Becky Lynch truly believes that she is The Man. As soon as that character turns into reality, then you're onto a winner. Promos have never been Ember's strongest point, but look how a heel turn did wonders for The Irish Lass Kicker. It gave her the confidence that she desperately needed, and it could easily do the same for Ember.

As a babyface, there aren't many options for Ember Moon to have great matches with. You've got female superstars such as Alicia Fox & Alexa Bliss who Ember could easily have good matches with- but there is potential for so much more. Could you imagine how amazing it would be if Ember was to face Sasha Banks or Bayley in a ring? The matches would be absolutely insane.

#2. Bobby Roode

The Glorious One has proven to be a successful heel in the past.
The Glorious One has proven to be a successful heel in the past.

Second on the list is none other than the Glorious one himself.

Bobby Roode has appeared on Raw & Smackdown, and despite having success in winning championships- his character has been very stale. Roode first arrived on Smackdown, where he managed to gain the US Championship. He was also embroiled in feuds with superstars such as Randy Orton, Rusev & Jinder Mahal- but he was never treated like the big deal that he should've been.

NXT was the platform where Roode thrived, and we saw The Glorious One at his best as he had an NXT Championship reign which lasted for a very long time. Roode played the role of a perfect heel who was not only glorious on the mic, but he was very calculated and tough in the ring as he was able to put on great matches with everybody.

But now, Roode is on Monday Night Raw- and he is one half of the Raw Tag Team Champion alongside Chad Gable. Their tag team has not been very entertaining as you would expect due to the booking. The best way for Roode to find himself again would be to have him & Gable lose the tag team titles, only for Roode to turn on Gable with a vicious attack.

Roode can simply state to the world that he doesn't need the fans anymore. The Glorious character is somebody who should be egotistical, conniving and simply reckless. This is the example of who Roode was during his run on NXT, where he didn't care about who he offended or attacked.

At the age of 41, Roode may not ever be in contention to be the face of the company- but he would definitely work as a heel talent that could easily slide in and out of the main event scene when needed.

#1. Finn Balor

The leader of Balor Club comes at #1 on the list.
The leader of Balor Club comes at #1 on the list.

Last but definitely not least, at #1 on the list is the leader of Balor Club.

Despite the fact that Balor is a former Universal Champion, it was a title reign that lasted only a day as an injury forced Balor to relinquish the championship. And ever since Balor made his return, there is no doubt that he has been looking very lost on the main roster.

You may pose the question, why would you turn one of the most over superstars on the Raw roster into a heel? Well, it worked for AJ Styles, didn't it? AJ debuted in the WWE as a face, and despite the fact that the fans always cheered for him- WWE made the decision to turn AJ heel, only to turn him back into a babyface down the line- and look where his character is right now. He is arguably the hottest male superstar in the entire WWE today.

There are so many babyfaces on the main roster such as Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman which means that there isn't anything worthwhile for Balor to do. And if you're an NJPW fan, you would know that Balor is much more comfortable playing the role of a heel than a face- evident from his former Prince Devitt character.

We have seen Balor as a babyface for 3 years, and that's 3 years worth of watching Balor smile and constantly do the same thing every week. Now would definitely be the time for a change in his character. There are so many directions where you could go with a Balor heel turn, such as reuniting him with Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows to form The Balor Club.

Or you could even have Balor transition himself into The Demon role on a permanent basis as a heel- but that is very unlikely to happen. However, out of all the superstars on the list- there is no doubt that Balor would benefit the most from a change of alignment.
