5 WrestleMania Matches That Were Essentially Pointless

Some matches were not meant for the biggest event of the year
Some matches were not meant for the biggest event of the year

WrestleMania is the biggest event of the year and much of the time the card has been planned over the course of the year so that all storylines heading into the show make sense. Obviously, sometimes this isn't the case.

There have been a number of occasions over the past few years when WWE has obviously panicked in the build-up to the biggest event of the year and rendered many of the matches that have taken place essentially pointless. This is either because the outcome of the match didn't have any impact on the wrestlers involved or the stipulations of the match didn't take effect for one reason or another.

WWE presents shows on a regular basis, so sometimes there are times when the company does overlook certain points of their programming, but this level of creativity isn't expected at the biggest event of the year.

#5. Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal - WrestleMania 34

What did this win do for Matt Hardy?
What did this win do for Matt Hardy?

The Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 34 was rumored to be one that WWE wanted to make a big deal out of since WrestleMania fell just days before the release of the HBO Documentary surrounding the life of Andre The Giant and the company wanted this to tie in.

Of course, the battle royal was about as entertaining as the four earlier versions of the match and the ending saw Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt join forces, as The Eater of Worlds appeared for the first time since swimming in the lake of reincarnation.

Fast forward six months and Matt Hardy hasn't mentioned his win at WrestleMania once, hasn't been spotted with his trophy and he didn't even receive a Championship shot because of it and has instead been pushed into the Tag Team Championship picture. Hardy has essentially retired from the ring because of a recurring back injury but at least he will always remember his historic win in New Orleans.

#4. Dean Ambrose vs Brock Lesnar - WrestleMania 32

Dean Ambrose's match with Brock Lesnar back at WrestleMania 32 was supposed to be a match where Ambrose was able to show off the edge that he had when it came to Hardcore matches, but because of the fact that Lesnar was looking at potential UFC matches, he wasn't willing to take any big bumps from Ambrose.

This meant that a match that was built to be one straight from the Attitude Era actually turned into one of the worst on the card as Ambrose was completely dominated and Lesnar walked out with the victory after using his regular five moves.

Ambrose has since spoken out on the Stone Cold Podcast about how frustrated he was when it came to planning a match with Lesnar and Paul Heyman but neither man has crossed paths since which is perhaps for the best.

#3. AJ Lee and Paige vs Nikki and Brie Bella - WrestleMania 31

In a time before The Women's Revolution, AJ Lee and Paige were forced to team up and take on Nikki and Brie Bella at WrestleMania 31 in a match that saw Paige take much of the abuse throughout the match before AJ Lee picked up the win of the Black Widow.

Lee then went on to retire from WWE just days later when she decided that it was time to lace up her Chuck Taylors for the very last time, which left Paige to fend off The Bellas on her own for a number of months, until Becky Lynch and Charlotte were promoted to the main roster.

Lee and Paige won the match, but at the time Nikki Bella was the Champion and it was later reported that if WWE knew that Lee was going to retire then she wouldn't have won the match at WrestleMania, but the fact that she did meant that this win was completely overlooked by WWE in the years that followed.

#2. The WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal - WrestleMania 34

WWE decided that because the men in WWE had The Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania, then the women should be given the same privilege at WrestleMania 34 and allowed them to compete in the first-ever Women's WrestleMania battle royal. Women from SmackDown, Raw and NXT all competed in the battle royale for the right to fight for a Championship of their choice.

Naomi won the match and was supposed to receive a Women's Championship opportunity off the back of this, but six months later, Naomi still waits for this title shot and has recently been added to the women's battle royal at Evolution. This has forced the SmackDown Women's Champion to react on Twitter and state that she wasn't even given the trophy that she won at WrestleMania earlier this year, so what was the point in the match?

#1. The Undertaker vs Shane McMahon - WrestleMania 32

What was the point in Undertaker vs Shane McMahon?
What was the point in Undertaker vs Shane McMahon?

The Undertaker has had a number of disappointing matches at WrestleMania in recent years, but one of the worst was when he faced Shane McMahon inside Hell in a Cell at WrestleMania 32. The stipulation was that if Shane won then he would gain control of WWE, but he lost.

Shane has since gone on to gain full control of SmackDown Live as the commissioner anyway, so what was the point in having a match for control of the company if there was a plan for Shane to go on to be SmackDown's commissioner anyway?

The Undertaker was supposed to face John Cena at WrestleMania 32 but he wasn't cleared to compete in time which is why Shane was brought in in his place and this match was created, but the stipulation shouldn't have been added if WWE weren't going to honor it.
