Top 5 infamous WWE impromptu bookings

These bookings didn't go well with the fans

Impromptu matches are always fun. With the air of unpredictability around them, they are bound to be a success most of the time. Take for example, the WWE Money in the Bank cash-ins. Unless your name is John Cena or Braun Strowman, you take advantage of the surprise element and pounce on it when the champion is down and almost out.

Then, there are some impromptu bookings which still receive fan adulation. John Cena was battered after overcoming Triple H, Kofi Kingston, Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, and defending champion Sheamus in an Elimination Chamber match in 2010.

However, Vince McMahon cut his championship celebration shot by announcing that he had to defend his WWE Championship then and there against Batista.

But, some impromptu bookings have fallen flat miserably. Without further ado, here are the 5 worst WWE impromptu bookings.

July 2011 was an eventful month in the WWE for many reasons. Firstly, CM Punk left the WWE momentarily after defeating John Cena at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Secondly, Big Match John got fired. Thirdly, Vince McMahon was relieved of his duties and Triple H took over WWE's control.

While fans had remained confused as to how much of it was real and how much of it was scripted, WWE initiated a tournament to crown a new champion for the vacated title. Rey Mysterio won it after defeating The Miz in the finals, only to lose it to the returning John Cena that night.

Raw General Manager Kurt Angle announced a battle royal, with the winning team receiving a tag team title shot against The Bar at WrestleMania. Braun Strowman wasn't announced to participate in it, but won the match nonetheless. However, that is not the impromptu booking we are talking about.

For weeks, fans and critics were speculating as to who would partner The Monster Among Men at WM34. Braun Strowman went to the crowd and handpicked a random 11-year-old teenager Nicholas, later revealed to be WWE official, John Cone's son.

Braun Strowman single-handedly squashed The Bar, with Nicholas' only contribution being receiving a hot tag. Braun Strowman and Nicholas would relinquish the championship a night later on Raw, citing Nicholas' conflicting school schedule.

#3 Edge becomes the WWE Champion - 2008 Survivor Series

The Undertaker slammed Edge from the top of the ladder onto the ring canvas and burst him into flames at SummerSlam in a Hell in a Cell match. The Rated-R Superstar wasn't seen in WWE following that, and returned at the co-main event of Survivor Series 2008.

The original match was supposed to be a triple threat between Jeff Hardy, Triple H, and Vladimir Kozlov. However, The Charismatic Enigma was attacked earlier in the night (later revealed to be Matt Hardy) and the match became a one-on-one contest. The bout was extremely tepid and the crowd vented out their frustrations on both competitors.

They were so bored that when Vickie Guerrero had arrived midway in the match, instead of booing her, they cheered in unison. The then General Manager of SmackDown squeaked on the microphone, "He's here!". The fans believed that Jeff had recovered, but Edge came out and speared his way to victory.

Ignoring the controversy Saudi Arabia had been marred in, WWE decided to go ahead with its Crown Jewel pay-per-view, respecting the 10-year contract they had signed with the oil-rich nation.

Apart from Shawn Michaels coming out of retirement, another notable feature of the event was an 8-man tournament named 'WWE World Cup' to decide the Best in the World.

Dolph Ziggler made it to the finals of the grueling tournament after overcoming Kurt Angle and Seth Rollins in the initial rounds, whereas The Miz clawed his way after taking out Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio.

The Miz and Dolph Ziggler brawled with each other before the match even began. As a result, The A-lister got injured, and was deemed unfit to compete. Shane McMahon, the SmackDown General Manager, was present at ringside and replaced The Miz.

After delivering a 'Coast to Coast' to the former World Champion, Shane McMahon won the tournament.

The main event and the final match of WrestleMania 9 was supposed to be one for the World Heavyweight Championship featuring the defending champion Bret Hart and Yokozuna. After some back and forth action, Mr. Fuji put salt on Bret Hart's eyes, that allowed the Japanese to pick up the victory.

The action wasn't finished there. Mr. Fuji challenged Hulk Hogan, who had come to check on Bret Hart, to an impromptu match. The Hulkster obliged and Mr. Fuji tried to put salt in his eyes too.

However, this time it backfired as Hogan ducked and the sodium chloride met Yokozuna's eyes. The American hero followed it up with his signature leg drop to win the championship within 22 seconds.
