The Hell in a Cell match has been one of the most popular inventions which the WWE has ever come up with. The match is known for its brutality and aggression and is one of the most feared matches in all of WWE.

It is then of very little surprise that the Hell in a Cell concept has given rise to some of the most brutal and iconic matches in the history of the WWE. One only has to think back to the horrific and brutal match which The Undertaker had against Mankind. Very few people will ever forget how Mick Foley fell from the top of the Hell in a Cell structure not once but twice.

Reports were that The Undertaker himself had thought that at one point Foley was killed during the match. This again just highlights how extreme this type of match is and it is fair to say that many superstars who have taken part in any Hell in a Cell match are not the same after coming out of it. Superstars claim that this is the type of match which can shorten careers and that is completely accurate.

The concept of the Hell in a Cell match remains too popular to abandon and its popularity has even resulted in it having an entire pay-per-view event dedicated to it. This shows that the Hell in a Cell match is here to stay and that we as the WWE Universe can look forward to many more epic encounters inside the solid steel structure.

This year's Hell in a Cell pay-per-view will see Braun Strownman facing off against Roman Reigns and while these two have clashed before, they will take it to the next level in this type of match. This article will take a look at 5 historic Hell in a Cell matches which are among the best of all time

#1 Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker (No Mercy 2002)

Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker have had many physical matches over the past few years, but none of these come close to matching the brutality we all witnessed during their Hell in a Cell match at No Mercy in 2002.

Lesnar was at the top of the WWE at this point and there were virtually no superstars in the WWE locker room who could stand up to him. The Undertaker was naturally the exception to this rule.

Hell in a Cell was a match which The Undertaker was at home in and was usually a dominant figure in and while he did manage to push Lesnar to his limits during the match, it would be Lesnar who would rise to the top and cement his place as the man to beat in the WWE.

Not many superstars can bust open The Undertaker and this is exactly what we saw with these two athletes in the ring. It was a match which signaled the beginning of Lesnar's reign as the top superstar in the WWE, something which was made even more clear by him holding the title while standing on top of the structure after claiming the win.

#2 Batista vs Triple H ( Vengence 2005)

These two superstars may no longer be an active part of the WWE roster but they gave the WWE Universe a match to remember.

This was a match which would see Batista establish himself as a main event superstar and firmly put himself in the title picture. He was no longer the subordinate to Triple H who served as The Game's muscle during his days with evolution.

Instead, he would bust open The Game during the match and lay him out with a Batista Bomb to signal the birth and rise of a new superstar. It was a thoroughly physical match - potentially one of the most brutal which either of these superstars have ever been involved in.

#3 The Undertaker vs Triple H (WrestleMania 28)

Very few fans will ever forget this match especially since it was mentioned by Triple H on Raw when he announced that he would face The Undertaker one more time in Melbourne, Australia.

The match was hailed as 'The End of an Era' and it certainly lived up to this title. Both men gave everything they had in the match and it was one of the most physical matches in the PG era.

Shawn Michaels was the guest referee during the match and this just added the drama and intrigue which the match already had during its build up. The Undertaker's streak was in serious threat of being ended with him being locked in a cell with both Triple H and Shawn Michaels, especially when Triple H seemed to have the upper hand for most of the match.

In the end, The Undertaker would be victorious, and the image of him standing together with Michaels and Triple H at the end of the match is something which will be remembered for a long time.

#4 Shawn Michaels vs The Undertaker (Bad Blood, In your House)

Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker have always given us thrilling matches which keep us at the edge of our seats, and this is exactly what they did during their Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood, In Your House.

Michaels took a thorough beating during the match and it seemed that The Undertaker was well on his way to a victory. That is until Kane made his appearance to hand Michaels the unlikely win.

As dominant as The Undertaker was, Michaels proved just how resilient he could be and he pushed The Undertaker to his limits during the match. It was a match which helped Michaels push forward as a main event superstar in the WWE as well as one which gave us one of the best rivalries in WWE - The Undertaker vs Kane.

#5 The Undertaker vs Mankind (King of the Ring, 1998)

Very few fans in the WWE Universe as well as WWE superstars themselves would argue that the best Hell in a Cell match in the history of the WWE has to be The Undertaker vs Mankind during the King of the Ring pay-per-view event in 1998.

It was a match which had everything and one which few people can believe even happened. Safety seemed to be a discarded concept as the two superstars gave their all, with Mankind looking as if though he might lose his life during the match.

Pictures of the match give a good idea as to the brutality which ensued during the match but they don't even come close to watching the entire match unfold. One can hardly believe that Foley escaped from that match with his life and what was left of his teeth after falling from the demonic structure not once but twice.
