SmackDown Live saw the fallout from SummerSlam after an excellent edition of Raw saw a WWE Universal Championship Match, and a huge reunion by Shield. With WWE SummerSlam having been one of the best editions of the show in recent memory, SmackDown Live had a lot to pick up from. There were two Championship matches which ended in Disqualification, while Shinsuke retained his United States title against Jeff Hardy after the latter took a bad bump on the apron from a Swanton Bomb.

SmackDown Live saw a grudge match between Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton, as well as a No Disqualification Title Match.


The Miz addressed the crowd on his win at SummerSlam:

The show started off with the Miz and Maryse, as the duo came out to address the audience after having defeated Daniel Bryan at SummerSlam. Miz came out and in a broken, almost sobbing voice, he mimicked and mocked Daniel Bryan's retirement speech from two years ago. He said that it was with a 'heavy heart and utmost sadness' that he 'retired'. While the crowd and the commentary table gasped, he continued in his normal voice saying he retired from ever having to face Daniel Bryan again.

He continued to talk about his win at SummerSlam, where he said that he had defeated Daniel Bryan with a punch harder than any Daniel Bryan could have thrown. The Miz said that Daniel Bryan's punches and kicks were not hard enough to affect him, and in the end, he won, in front of his wife, Maryse, and his daughter, Monroe Skye.

He was interrupted by Daniel Bryan, who just said one word, 'Coward'. He repeated it as he walked down the ramp. The Miz told him that the record books would only show the fact that the Miz had beaten Daniel Bryan and nothing else.

Bryan said that Miz had only talked and talked, and it was enough. Bryan was interrupted by Maryse, who said that he should retire again and that he could change his name to Daniel Bella. Brie Bella's music played, and she ran out, not stopping to talk to Bryan. Maryse ran to the outside of the ring, while Brie took it to the Miz and attacked him with a punch and dumped Miz on the outside.

Daniel Bryan revealed that he had talked to Paige and that he would be facing The Miz, and Maryse, while teaming up with his wife, Brie Belle at Hell in a Cell in a Mixed Tag Team Match.

Afterward, The Miz and Maryse talked to Paige backstage and said that he did not understand what she was thinking and that she was a worse General Manager than Brie Bella.

Paige reminded the Miz that he had just been punched by Brie Bella, and that the tag match would not only take place but that it would be, "AWESOME".

Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton:

Who stood tall in the battle of the legends?

Jeff Hardy finally met his tormentor of the past few weeks, Randy Orton in a singles match. Orton had attacked Hardy after the latter lost his title at Extreme Rules, and would continue to assault the younger Hardy brother over the next few weeks with vicious bouts of violence. He later revealed that he had set himself on a course to knock all the 'heroes' of the WWE Universe off their pedestal. At SummerSlam, Hardy hurt himself when he missed the Swanton Bomb and landed back-first on the apron.

Randy Orton took control at the beginning against Jeff Hardy and drove the latter into the ring post. Orton continued to drive Hardy into the announce table during the break and dropped him with a back body drop.

Hardy created distance between himself and Orton, with strikes and then hit him with a Twist of Fate. Orton stopped him on the top rope and then put his finger through Hardy's ear tearing at it. Hardy stopped Orton in his tracks with a low blow and lost the match by disqualification.

He continued to assault Orton outside the ring and drove him into the announce table and then into the ring post. Hardy then threw Orton into the crowd and the two continued their fight in the technical area, where he attacked Orton with a steel chair into Orton again and again. He laid Orton out onto the table and drove a camera into his skull.

Hardy climbed to the top of a case of technical units and hit Orton with a huge Swanton Bomb. Orton was left lying in the ruins of the technical area.

Result: Randy Orton won by Disqualification.

Backstage, Renee interviewed the Bar and asked them what their plan was after The Bludgeon Brothers faced New Day in their title match on SmackDown Live.

The Bar said that whoever won would see them as the next challengers. They were interrupted by Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, both of whom said that they too would be challenging for the titles. The Bar and The Good Brothers ended up agreeing to face each other before either could challenge for the titles.

Naomi vs Peyton Royce w/ Billie Kay:

Naomi came out to face Peyton Royce. Royce and Billie Kay came out poking fun at Naomi's friends, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch.

Peyton dumped Naomi to the outside and had the better of Naomi in the beginning, with Billie Kay shouting encouragement from the outside. Peyton beat down Naomi with strikes and blows in the middle of the ring and slowing down the offence.

Naomi dodged a kick from Peyton and then attacked Peyton's hamstrings. She hit Royce with an Enzuigiri and then a High Kick to the face from the Apron. Naomi hit Billie Kay, who was looking to interfere and ran her into the ring post.

Peyton took advantage of the distraction, and pushed Naomi into the ring post, before hitting her with a Fisherman Suplex for the win.

Result: Peyton Royce defeated Naomi.


Backstage, Big E had his ribs taped up after having been attacked by the Bludgeon Brothers at SummerSlam. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston reminded Big E, that they had history at Brooklyn, having started their record-breaking Tag Team Championship run there.

Becky Lynch came down to the ring and said that she deserved to be the Women's Champion. According to her, SummerSlam was not supposed to be about Ronda Rousey, or Charlotte Flair or anyone else, but it was supposed to be about her.

She desperately wanted to get away from Charlotte's shadow and be the Women's Champion at the end of the night at SummerSlam.

She accused the fans of not backing her and said that she deserved a chance. She said that they had not protested when Charlotte had been added to the match, and they had not supported her at SummerSlam either and had applauded Charlotte.

She said the fans were a generation of all talk and no action. The referee slapping the mat was like someone getting her out of a trance. She said that Charlotte had stolen her opportunity for the last time and she wanted to rip her head off.

She knew that she deserved the chance and to be the Champion, not because the fans thought it was her time, but because she knew it to be her time.

Charlotte interrupted her, shaking the Women's Championship and threw it to the side. She attacked Becky in the middle of the ring. The two started to brawl and the action spilt into the ringside. The officials tried to stop them, but the brawl had gone to another level.

They came back in the ring and the two continued to assault each other. The SmackDown Women's Division came out of the back and tried to separate the two women from their knockdown brawl. They dragged the women off of each other, as SmackDown went into the break.

Andrade 'Cien' Almas and Zelina Vega vs Rusev and Lana:

Andrade 'Cien' Almas and Zelina Vega came out on top at SummerSlam and defeated Rusev and Lana on the preshow.

On SmackDown, they had a rematch, as Almas looked to take out Rusev. Almas locked in an Armbar utilizing the ropes, but Rusev broke away. Rusev hit Almas with a high kick to knock him down, and Lana came in to knock Zelina out of the ring.

Zelina did the same as Almas and put Lana in a stretch using the ropes. Lana dropped Vega and tagged Rusev in. Rusev charged and took out Almas. He hit Almas with a Spin Kick and sized him up for the Machka Kick. Almas sidestepped and knocked him down with a big elbow.

Almas hit the running double knees on Rusev, for a near fall. Rusev stopped Almas and dumped him out of the ring, while Lana took Zelina out of the ring.

Almas tried to come in and hit Rusev with the steel chair. English stopped Almas and grabbed the Steel Chair. Rusev hit the Machka kick on Almas and locked in the Accolade. Almas tapped out, and Rusev won, with the help of English, who prevented Almas from using the steel chair.

Rusev looked happy while Lana was conflicted, while Aiden exited shouting that he was there for them.

Result: Rusev & Lana defeated Andrade 'Cien' Almas & Zelina Vega

In a backstage promo, Shinsuke Nakamura talked about deserving a coronation with the United States Title and welcomed the audience to the United States of Nakamerica.

AJ Styles addressed his actions at SummerSlam:

AJ Styles had promised his family he would not lose control at SummerSlam, and that he would not let Samoa Joe get to him. Samoa Joe addressed his daughter and at that point, AJ lost control and attacked Samoa Joe.

On SmackDown Live, AJ Styles talked to Renee. He said that he was not proud of losing due to his actions at SummerSlam. He said that he did not regret what he did to Joe, but he was making a new promise. He said that if Joe addressed Styles' family again, then AJ would rip out his heart.

Samoa Joe attacked him from behind and locked in the Coquina Clutch. After leaving Styles unconscious, Joe addressed Wendy Styles through the camera, saying that her husband would not be coming home to tuck in the children.


Paige talked to several officials making sure AJ Styles got medical attention. Carmella came into the office and said that she wanted a WWE SmackDown Women's Championship rematch.

They were interrupted by R-Truth who said that he would only have to pin Carmella to get a match for the title. Paige explained to him that this was not the case and told him to leave.

Paige gave Carmella her rematch for the title against Charlotte on the following SmackDown, following which R-Truth picked up Carmella and ran away.

The New Day vs The Bludgeon Brothers (c) (No Disqualification Match for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship):

After the Disqualification win for the New Day at SummerSlam, they got another chance for the titles on SmackDown Live, this time in a No Disqualification Match.

The battle between the two kicked off fast and furious. Big E went to the back after the New Day's entrance, due to the injury to his ribs.

Harper threw Woods over the table and the action continued at ringside, with neither team entering the ring. Rowan kicked Kofi off the table, and flipped Woods into the barrier, as the Bludgeon Brothers looked strong. Kofi was laid out after Harper knocked him down by throwing a padded commentary chair at him.

The action continued both inside and outside the ring after the commercial break. Outside the ring, Woods knocked Harper into the table with a Drop-toe Hold. Kofi dropped Rowan inside the ring, and the New Day then introduced a ladder to the proceedings. They were stopped by Rowan, and Harper then hit them with a Suicide Dive.

Harper and Rowan threw chairs into the ring and then threw the New Day members into the stairs and barricade. Harper laid Kingston on the apron and beat him up. They laid him against the barricade and then Rowan ran into him. Harper hit him with a Big Boot and kept him down for a near fall.

Rowan took down Woods. Kofi managed to kick the chair out of Harper's hands and then hit him with a DDT onto the chair. Rowan took Kofi out and then did the same to Woods.

They attacked Woods and hit him with a Facecrusher on the Apron. They sent Woods into the ring and arranged the chairs propping up a ladder on two of them. They then picked up Woods and was about to drop him on the ladder, but Kofi dove at them. They hit Kofi with a Double Crucifix Bomb on the ladder for a near fall, as Kofi kicked out to the gasps of the crowd.

Rowan brought out a table next. Rowan kicked Woods down yet again and went to pick Kofi up then hitting him with headbutts while pinning him against the post. They attacked Kofi with a mallet, but Woods pulled Kofi out of the way. Rowan ran through the barricade taking himself out.

Harper brought Woods inside the ring and then looked Powerbomb him through the Table. Kofi interrupted and hit him with the Mallet. Kofi hit Harper with Trouble in Paradise before laying him out on the table.

Woods hit Harper with an Elbow from the top rope sending him through the table. They pinned Harper to win the match and the SmackDown Live Tag Team Titles.

Despite taking a lot of punishment, they persevered and became five-time Tag Team Champions.

Result: New Day defeated The Bludgeon Brothers to become the new SmackDown Tag Team Champions
