Mumbai Indians (MI) scored a daunting total of 192/7 in the first innings against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2024 on Thursday, April 18. Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur hosted the clash.

PBKS stand-in captain Sam Curran won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. Kagiso Rabada dismissed MI opener Ishan Kishan cheaply for 8(8) to give a good start to the hosts with the ball. Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav then set up a decent platform for their side with an enterprising partnership of 81 runs for the second wicket.

Rohit (36) couldn't convert his start into a big one, as he perished in the 12th over trying to up the ante. Suryakumar Yadav continued at the other end and hit a brilliant half-century, his second this season in four games.

He walked back to the pavilion in the 17th over after a well-made 78 (53) on a tricky surface. Tim David played a vital cameo of 14 (7) in the end to provide the finishing touches to the innings. Harshal Patel (3/31) was the pick of PBKS bowlers, while Sam Curran also picked up two crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

"I took a little more time today"- MI batter Suryakumar Yadav after first innings of MI vs PBKS clash in IPL 2024

At the mid-innings break, MI batter Suryakumar Yadav opened up about his recovery process and the action that unfolded during the first innings of the match. He said:

"It is going really well and I am almost there near. I have started fielding and training, hoping I will be on the field for the whole 40 overs. Nothing much [about his celebration after half-century]. There was a batters meeting and we spoke about a batter batting for 15-16 overs, so it was about that. I took a little more time today.

He continued:

"Once Rohit got out, someone had to bat deep. There hasn't been much dew here and if that is the case even today then the score is way above par."
