He won 2 trophies in his career, the Championship and UEFA Intertoto Cup. Both came when he was a player for Newcastle. 

He made 268 appearances for Newcastle from 2003-04 to 2015-16. 

He retired in September 2021, just days after being named captain of Wellington Phoenix ahead of the 2021–22 A-League Men season.

He is the current head coach of Gulf United, a Second Division football club in the United Arab Emirates.
