Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns headlined WrestleMania 31

Roman Reigns is the current WWE Universal Champion. The Big Dog has shown that he is a fighting champion by defending his Universal Title thrice in the first month (the previous Universal Champion Brock Lesnar took 5 months to defend his title thrice).

However, Roman Reigns is not free from criticism. One of the biggest criticisms faced by the reigning Universal Champion is that he just uses just 2 moves and cannot put on a good match. But the truth is very far from it. Yes, Reigns' match style gets repetitive, but that has not stopped him from putting on some great matches in his career so far.

In this list, we will be looking at the best five matches of Roman Reigns. We are only considering the matches where Reigns participated as a singles competitor. Hence, matches involving The Shield and traditional Survivor series matches are exempt from this list.

So without further ado, lets get started.

#5 Roman Reigns vs Daniel Bryan - number 1 contender match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

The Yes! man vs The Big Dog

Let us kick the list off with an underrated match. Roman Reigns' first year as a singles competitor saw him being skyrocketed to the main event. He defeated Randy Orton clean at SummerSlam 2014, and won the 2015 Royal Rumble, the latter of which angered many hardcore fans.

When Daniel Bryan returned from the injury which forced him to relinquish the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, fans wanted him to get his proper rematch. Thus they rooted for Bryan to win the 2015 Royal Rumble.

The thing is, Bryan got eliminated very early, upsetting the fans in attendance. Even the hashtag "cancel WWE Network" trended for a few months after that.

So as a response to the crowd reaction, WWE made Roman Reigns defend his number 1 contender rights to Daniel Bryan at Fastlane. The build-up to this match and the match itself was brutal and hard hitting. Roman even kicked out of the running knee, which was the most protected finisher at that time.

This match had everything - intense back and forth action, near falls, and an anxious crowd. But it is still one of the most overlooked matches.

#4 Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns (vs Seth Rollins) - WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 31

Seth Rollins with "the heist of the century"

When Roman Reigns was scheduled to take on Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania 31, no one thought we would be getting this. Unlike their encounter 3 years later at WrestleMania 34, this match was really good.

Brock Lesnar absolutely thrashed the challenger. The Beast threw The Big Dog like he was a small toy. However, Reigns made a small comeback by spearing The Beast Incarnate twice in a row.

While he was attempting another Superman Punch, Lesnar countered it for an F-5, which triggered the best moment of the entire night. Seth Rollins sprinted down the ramp to cash in his Money in the Bank contract, elevating this good match to an all-time great.

After a small sequence, Rollins hit the curb stomp on Reigns for the victory - completing the heist of the century.

#3 Kevin Owens vs Roman Reigns - Universal Championship match - Royal Rumble 2017

Roman Reigns could not beat Kevin Owens at Roadblock: End of the Line due to Chris Jericho's intervention. Hence their match at Royal Rumble 2017 was made a No Disqualification match, with Jericho suspended above the ring in a Shark Cage.

Kevin Owens was the MVP of this match, he even went through a flight of chairs to make this match more brutal than what it already was.

This match was not just about the extreme actions. Owens pulled out a Stone Cold Stunner, a Backstabber, and even gave Reigns a taste of his own medicine - a Superman punch. This match was so good that even the interference of Braun Strowman could not relegate it.

The crowd (who would boo the ear out of Reigns in the main event) cheered every single second of this bout.

#2 Roman Reigns vs AJ Styles - WWE World Heavyweight Championship - Extreme Rules 2016

AJ vs Roman

AJ Styles was the biggest name in professional wrestling when he came to WWE in 2016. Naturally he got inserted into the title picture within 4 months. Roman Reigns and Styles had a good match at Payback. But they stepped it up a notch in their Extreme Rules match.

This was truly a battle of power and agility. Roman was the powerhouse and Styles was the high flyer. Both of them played their roles to perfection. Styles could not keep Reigns down for the count of three even with a Styles Clash onto a steel chair. The involvement of The Usos and The Club surprisingly made the match even better.

The match ended when Reigns countered The Phenomenal Forearm with a Spear in mid-air, and pinned The Phenomenal One for the three count.

The icing on the cake was Seth Rollins' surprise return from injury. He made his intentions clear after Pedigree-ing Reigns and posing with the championship he never lost.

#1 Fatal 4-way match for the Universal Championship - SummerSlam 2017

It looked certain that a new champion would be crowned when Braun Strowman Powerslammed Lesnar through two announcers tables

WWE makes mistakes very often, but sometimes they get it perfect. This was one of those examples. Brock Lesnar's title reign was miserable, but the best thing that came out of it was the fatal 4-way Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe, Braun Strowman and the champion Brock Lesnar.

It looked certain that a new champion would be crowned when Braun Strowman Powerslammed Lesnar through two announcers tables, and flipped another table on him, causing the medics to carry him out.

The Beast Incarnate came back and rained absolute havoc on the rest of the competitors, to finally F-5 The Big Dog for the win.
